Fighting EAB in Sioux Falls

With the recent outbreak of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) in Sioux Falls, SD., Arborjet would like to help mitigate the devastation of this invasive species by donating time and materials to treat approximately 45-50 trees at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Given that the property is in close proximity to the infestation, Arborjet believes this event will provide an excellent educational opportunity for the community to learn about the risks and treatment options of EAB, and on the value of urban tree canopy.

Emerald Ash Borer is a bright metallic green beetle originally found in eastern Asia. The tiny beetle feeds and breeds exclusively on Ash trees. The larvae (the immature stage) feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. As of May 2018, EAB is now found in 33 states, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba. Since its discovery, it has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees in North America. Arborjet is hoping for a great turnout to help fight EAB in Sioux Falls.

St. Michael Cemetery is over 100 years old. It was founded in 1881, when Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tobin conveyed some property to Bishop Martin Marty for the establishment of a Catholic Cemetery in Sioux Falls. The cemetery was named after the single parish in the city at that time, St. Michael Church.

This event is part of Arborjet’s latest initiative, “Saving America’s Iconic Trees,” to ensure the health and longevity of the country’s trees. The campaign targets America’s most beloved trees, offering complimentary treatment to prevent insects, disease and poor health. Throughout 2018, Arborjet will donate high-profile treatments and host educational events across the country. The company invites homeowners, state, city, town and municipal leaders to nominate iconic trees in their communities for potential recognition and treatment by visiting www.arborjet.com/saving-americas-iconic-trees.
